Reads: Jan. 9-15, 2023

Recently, I challenged myself to the challenge of reading 300 books, knowing that I wasn’t going to meet the goal; I did want to have fun trying. Imagine telling a classroom of middle schoolers that you were going to read 300 books. Some were impressed. Most were dumbfounded. I saw a couple of terrified faces.

This week, I got sucked into the Korean drama The Glory. It was worth it. I’ve watched Korean dramas since I was in college. During those days, you had to download them from places like Livejournal. Now, they are everywhere, capturing the attention of Americans (who hopefully are skipping the dubs. Yikes!)

Therefore, I did not get much reading done. I was supposed to post the books I was reading this week but forgot to do so. That worked in my favor considering all things. I finished one book, and that was a middle grade graphic novel! However, I will also include books that I started reading this week:

Finished reading

Anne of West Philly by Ivy Noelle Weir and illustrated by Myisha Haynes. This is a middle grade graphic novel that I read for the club I sponsor. I couldn’t get into it, but I finished it as it wasn’t time intensive and because of my obligation. I didn’t really like the main character; however, I did appreciate the story and its message. This book was also a hit or miss with some of my students as well.

Started reading

1. The Book of Ichigo Ichie by Hector Garcia and Francese Miralles (adult nonfiction)

2. She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki (manga-Japanese edition)

3. The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain (adult fiction)

Reading next

Because I enjoy the process of rebuilding my reading habits, these are books going to my reading next pile. I don’t formally use Goodreads to hold my challenge only because I can’t add books that aren’t already on there. It’s great, however, for giving me a good estimate of how far I’m behind. Between today and tomorrow (MLK JR’s birthday), I plan to finish the above 3 books. So, I’m going to add five more reading next books below.

I should note that I’m liable to change my mind on what I decide to read. I just roll with it:

  1. Quit by Annie Duke (adult nonfiction)
  2. Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry (middle grade fiction)
  3. Ganbatte! The Japanese Art of Always Moving Foward by Albert Liebermann (adult nonfiction)
  4. わたしの1ヶ月1000円ごほうび (adult comic essay-Japanese edition)
  5. This One Wild and Precious life by Sarah Wilson (adult nonfiction)
